Review of last minutes meetings

Changes arising from the review of last meetings minutes

  • Minutes were reviewed from the last meeting and have been approved to be posted on the QCCAV website.

  • Susan went through the changes to the Terms of Reference a final time, asking all members present if there were any further changes or concerns; Lori reported she did not receive any changes or concerns from members via email since changes were made and distributed to members following the November 4th meeting. The Terms of Reference as amended at the November 4th Steering Committee meeting were approved for distribution to Members and posting on the QCCAV website.

Correspondence

  • Steven outlined an email received from the Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women and Children regarding their conference on Feb 8-9, 2010. The QCCAV has been invited to send 4 members, 2 from justice and 2 from community partners, all expenses paid including travel and accommodations (arriving Sunday February 7th and conference ending 12:30 pm on the 9th). It was decided that if there was more than 2 members from one or both of these categories wishing to go there will be a lottery to decide who receives the invitation and Susan will advise the outcome December 23rd. Lori will forward information on the conference to all Steering Committee Members (emailed December 13, 2009). Members are asked to let Lori know by email PRIOR to December 18th if: a) they have already been invited to this conference through their employer or other group. Specifically, if the shelters have been invited (the Executive is trying to get an idea of who has been invited), and b) if they wish to go using one of the 4 QCCAV invitations, please advise.

Financial Report

Sub-Committee Budgets DUE; Executive must know needs and

where funding must be spent prior to March 31, 2010; please send

this information to Lori at coordinator@qccav.ca . This will also be

on the Agenda for next Steering Committee meeting January 13th.

SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS

Executive
  • Terms of Reference changes are complete and final document will be forwarded to members and posted on the QCCAV website.

Education & Training
  • It was discussed that the November 5th Event was very well attended, received and reviewed. The evening events were not well attended by the public. It was discussed that perhaps the 'stigma' of the topic(s) keep people away. It was suggested that a different 'setting' or services may help this - hosting a dinner, offering 'babysitting', etc. It was also suggested that it may be better for the QCCAV to partner with a related organization doing these kinds of 'events' for the public in the future.

Child & Youth
  • No activity/report

Membership
  • Last meeting was November 17th, at this meeting the sub-committee updated the membership list, highlighting members who need 'reminder' letters re: attending meetings. Kelly sent Steven this list and Steven has sent the request for participation to these members. The sub-committee also discussed the AGM and are waiting for a reply from Sheldon Kennedy about his availability/willingness to speak at the AGM.

-         Steven also wrote to those members the Membership Sub-committee identified as being absent from the Steering Committee table (see sub-committee report above)

-         Steven advised he is a member of the 4 Counties Legal Providers Group who are putting forth a proposal for funding to look into and report on the issues rural people have in accessing legal services. The first step is the funding, then the group will host meetings in the community to determine the needs. Agencies may receive emails and/or phone calls to discuss this issue in the community. The end result will be a conference and/or series of meetings to enhance these services.

-         Steven reported on the progress of the 'Roots of Empathy' program - he advised that the school board in Lennox-Addington is going to have the program - he has written to them to find out how they made this happen and will report back.

-         Steven advised that in February 2010 there will be a meeting with the Law Commission looking at family law issues to see how these individuals can be better helped via the law clinic and to identify gaps in services.
