SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS

Executive
  • Sarah advised the committee about an increase in annualized dollars in the amount of $6,362, effective April 1, 2009; must be spent prior to end of March 2010. Sarah is showing a total of $34,561 annualized dollars in the QCCAV budget and she is going to contact Lynette, Program Supervisor at the Ministry, to ensure these numbers are correct. The Committee is looking for ideas on how to best spend this increased funding, noting a one-time project may be best as 6 weeks is not long enough to begin a program.  Sarah advised she has received some ideas. The following were presented:
    • Kim suggested putting forth some funds for their residential program for snow shoes they are looking to purchase; 12 pairs will cost approx. $1,920.
    • Sarah shared two school-based programs - one is a violence prevention/stress management for students consisting of 6 weeks of training and will cost $700; the other is running a 3 day March Break program for a Young Women Thriving program, 20 women ages for ages 11-18, cost is $1490.
    • Sarah also advised that Sandy is in need of further funding for the Thriver/Survivor program, $1,452 was proposed.
    • Kim spoke about the need for a vigil for the victims of the recent Quinte/Trenton tragedy and for all victims, but feels it is too soon presently. The committee felt the QCCAV should somehow be involved in this when it comes to fruition and agreed to provide $500 to the event for tea/coffee/refreshments.
    • This spends the additional annualized dollars as described above and was approved by the Committee members in attendance.

Education & Training
  • No meetings/report.

Child & Youth

Membership
  • Barb advised that Sheldon Kennedy will not be the speaker at the AGM; the date for the AGM will now be May 12th, 2010 most likely at the Fairfield Marriott.
  • This committee is next meeting on February 22nd. The AGM will be discussed; Barb brought forth the idea of having the speaker(s) for the AGM centre around the issues of cyber threats such as 'sexting', social networks such as facebook, etc., possibly involving the OPP/Toronto Sex Crimes Unit. Barb advised she will contact Lisa Robson for further information.

Other Business

?        Teresa presented information on author/speaker Michael Kaufman and his book 'Man Talk', about what young men should be taught regarding behaviour; a proactive rather than reactive approach. She felt he may be a good speaker for the future; his price is $3,200 plus mileage for all day training plus a second event in the evening. Committee felt this could be a valuable speaker for future training.

?        Teresa and Kate spoke about the Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women and Children Conference they attended on Feb 8-9th in Hamilton:

?        Kate advised 'confidentiality as a challenge' was a big topic of discussion - advised there is a need for a provincial protocol on this as information is not being shared between case workers, justice, doctors, etc. because of confidentiality, which can be a barrier in assisting clients. There are areas with 'one stop shopping'  for these services which allows for more anonymity and access to services and sharing of information between those taking care of the client for the sake of that client. Sarah advised Durham is presently doing this 'one stop shopping', but it is splitting the VAW community/services as some support this model and some do not and added the benefits of this type of delivery of service should be discussed in the future.

?        Kate also discussed the 'memorandum of understanding' which is a contract to do a case conference/service agreement to help break down the barriers of confidentiality. For a copy of the 'memorandum of understanding' please email Kate at lightfootk@hastingscounty.com; to be discussed at the March 2010 QCCAV Steering Committee meeting.

?        Kate advised Protocols were also discussed, including the need having all agencies involved in the Protocol relating in-house training to the Protocol.

?        Kate also discussed creating a focus group within the community to see what is needed/desired - training, services, transportation, etc.

?        Teresa advised she will be on a 'tour' to spread information on what DVSARP does; she is trying to touch base with the justice members - if anyone wants her to come speak please contact Teresa at tgauthier@qhc.on.ca.
