Community Events |

- Kim advised community agencies have organized a memorial and ?call to action? for April 17th at the Empire Theatre in Belleville for all victims of violence - both men & women; start time will be around 6pm, memorial at 6:30; busses have been organized in Hastings and Prince Edward County; Kent Laidlaw will speak (45mins-hr), he was a Halton Regional Police Officer for 31yrs and speaks to communities regarding resiliency, how to move on, heal, etc.; there will also be music, a couple local people will be speaking; the night will be themed ?our community is coming together, heal, hope act? - will include a candle light vigil afterwards outside the theatre ? a poster has been created and will be distributed shortly. Capacity of the theatre is only 750 so this is a concern, expecting 1,000+ to attend due to the number of tragedies and victims in the community; anyone who cannot fit inside will be welcome to participate in the candlelight vigil afterwards, the organizers are trying to obtain use of the parking lot and have sound outside so these people can hear the speakers, music, etc. from inside the theatre. Kim advised they would like an Honour Guard that evening, the committee agreed this was a good idea; have to include all emergency workers from each region including Military Police. Karen proposed that some of the $5,000 of the 2010/11 annualized dollars for the protocol committee should go to the cost of this evening; the committee agreed to this. The organizers are also looking to see if the Ministry of the Attorney General may give some funding; $500 is already in hand from the QCCAV. Accessibility needs must be addressed; the Empire has wheelchair areas and is accessible to all. The organizers are in need of some volunteers to act as ushers and in other capacities. There will be a table with literature from members and signatories, Lori volunteered to 'man' the table during the event. Other details such as the need for portable toilets, interpreters, tent for the over-flow of people outside, etc. are still being decided. Donations will be accepted that evening; the organizers were wanting the cheques to go to the QCCAV so it is not 'agency specific', however if the donations go through the QCCAV tax receipts cannot be issued; the idea of making a memorial fund was raised and one of the charitable member agencies would be the holder of the funds so tax receipts may be issued; the money will go to a bursary - a female bursary at Loyalist College has been suggested. Kim asked all members to help ensure all who should be invited to this evening and the vigil are invited. Please email Kim at SACQD@LKS.net for further information or to assist with this event.
- Michelle spoke about a strategic plan for the East Region; highlighted how difficult it can be for rural people to access services l ? distance & communication barriers ? not all policies work for all areas, this should be taken into account by the government agencies when determining funding..
- Water Bottle Campaign ? no decisions yet
- It was noted that in the protocol there is a way to conduct case conferencing (pg 193 protocol); how would a memorandum of understanding work? Lisa and Teresa working on this; has been added to the next QCCAV Steering Committee agenda.
- Gayle advised the ODSP is in the midst of modernization ? change to system, staff organization, classifications as well as philosophical - how they deal with service, will be client and community centred; end goal is community inclusion ? means different things for different people, ie. employment, being out in community; responsive program is goal but Gayle advises getting there/restructuring is going to be a bit of a challenge; presently in early stages ? anticipate by fall will be implementing new model; they are going to need help and patience working through philosophical change; ODSP wants to be part of solutions rather than a barrier; Gayle advised she is willing to come out and talk to any agency at any time and will share further information as it comes.
- Pam advised 3 Oaks is exploring second stage housing and will keep the committee updated; they are finalizing the hiring of a new manager; Gale Cole is now shelter manager and new manager will be responsible for services outside of the shelter.
